The sinuses are four pairs of air-filled pockets located in the bone of the face, near the nose (the cheekbones, between the eyes, and behind the nose).
Their main purpose is to produce a mucus that moisturises the inside of the nose, protecting the nose from external irritants. It also humidifies and filters the air passing through to the lungs.
Sinuses must be able to drain regularly and freely in order to function properly.
Sinusitis occurs when the lining of the sinuses become inflamed or infected, and the drainage passage becomes obstructed, resulting in nasal congestion, nasal discharge (yellow or green), facial pain, and so on.
While it is a common symptom of sinusitis, it should also typically be accompanied by facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, cough or even a reduced sense of smell. Seek ENT attention to accurately determine the cause of your symptoms.
While some symptoms may get better on their own, it will mean unnecessary waiting in discomfort until they resolve. Furthermore, in rare cases, untreated sinusitis may result in dangerous complications such as meningitis and bone infections.
Besides surgery, there are many other treatment methods for sinusitis, including sufficient rest, hydration, pain medication and antibiotics. Even if surgery is recommended, it can now be done in a minimally invasive and highly precise fashion, ensuring better patient outcomes.
